Best Bets at the Craps Table

Craps is a very fast paced and exciting casino game and it can be quite confusing to the newcomer, with all of the various bets and jargon.  Thankfully, the simplest best are also the smart craps bets with the lowest house edge.

The most popular bet in craps is the Pass Line.  Players put any amount they wish on the Pass Line, and if the “shooter” (the person rolling the dice), rolls a 7 or 11 on the first roll, or the come out roll, you win.  If the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12 on the come out roll you lose.

If the shooter rolls a 4,5,6,8,9 or 10, then that number becomes what is called the “point”.  Now, you are hoping the shooter rolls the point number in order for you to win.  If he rolls a 7, you lose!  The shooter continues to roll until he either rolls the 7 or the point number.

The best bet you can make on the come out roll in craps is the “Don’t Pass Line”.  In this scenario, you are hoping the shooter rolls a 2, 3 or 12, in which case you will win or tie.  Most casinos give a “tie” on a roll of 12 and you just get your money back.  If the roll is a 7 or 11, you lose.  If the roll is a 4,5,6,8,9, or 10, that number becomes the point.  Now you are hoping the shooter rolls a 7.  If the shooter rolls a 7 before he rolls the point number, you win.

While “Don’t Pass” is the best bet at the craps table, it can be unpopular with the other players since you are in effect, betting against the shooter, hoping he does not roll that magical 7 or 11 on the come out roll.

Next, the very best craps bet you can make is the odds bet!  The odds bet is offered when the come out roll is a 4,5,6,8,9,10 and a point is established.  There is ZERO house edge on the odds bet!  Even money with the casino is rare indeed.  If you made a Pass Line bet originally and a 5 was rolled, for example, you are putting more money down that another 5 will be rolled before a 7 is.  If you originally made a Don’t Pass Line bet, then you are wagering extra money that a 7 will be rolled before the point number, or a 5 in this example.  Odds bets have a maximum amount you can bet, set by the casino.  A common odds bet is 3x your original Pass or Don’t Pass bet.  So if you bet $5 on Don’t Pass and a point number is rolled, then you can place $15 on the odds bet. ($5 original bet multiplied by 3).  The higher the odds bet allowed by the casino, the lower the overall house edge on the Pass Line and Don’t Pass Line bets, provided you bet the maximum odds bet every time you are able.  Obviously, if a casino offers 100x odds, many gamblers will have a difficult time betting the max.

Finally, the Place Bet on the 6 or 8 offers a moderate house edge.  If you “place the 6” and a 6 is rolled before a 7 in the current round, you win.  If the 7 is rolled, you lose.  Placing the 6 offers a payoff of 7 to 6.  So you have to bet $6 to win $7.

Craps Smart Bets

Odds Bets – Even Money!

Don’t Pass Line – 1.36% house edge on the come out roll.  This edge is lowered overall by betting the maximum on the odds bet.

Pass Line – 1.41% house edge on the come out roll.  Again, the overall edge can be lowered by betting the maximum odds bet.

Place Bet on the 6 or 8 – 1.52% house edge.

Worst Craps Bets

Any Seven – Almost a 17% house edge. Stay away!

Practically any bet, from field bets to center proposition bets give house edges of 5% to nearly 17%.  Stick with Pass and Don’t Pass and Place the 6 or 8 to cut the casino edge as low as possible.

Building your Craps Bankroll

With every single bet at the craps table giving the house an edge, value must be extracted from other factors other than strategic play.  That extra value can be found in comps, online casino VIP programs and bonuses.  Choose a casino or an online casino that rewards points, bonuses, comps, etc. for craps players and a savvy gambler can find ways to show positive results from the craps table by sticking to the smart bets with the lowest house advantage.
