Hey Bryan,

That’s a tough one. At first, I also thought he’d likely call a shove (it would have looked like a split), but since it was very early in the tournament you might have actually gotten max value from it. It’s all going to come down to your read on him as a player. Is he willing to risk his entire tournament life in an unraised pot so early on? There is a decent amount in the pot, but he’s not committed. Most decent players would be able to get away from that even if they have a boat.

There are definitely some advantages to shoving, however. To many players, it would look like you have a King and are trying to scoop the whole pot with an aggressive move. If he’s a bad player with a big ego, he won’t want you to get away with it. In that case I’d like the shove. Even if he folds, you wouldn’t have to show the hand, which might get him on tilt. Just don’t try to run him over with a bluff later.

Overall, though, I’d say that under normal circumstances with a competent opponent, I’d play it the same. There’s not too much you can do when you’re out of position like this.

Hey Andrew, I'd like to get your thoughts on a hand I played in a live WSOP circuit event tournament a couple weeks ago - as it relates to this article. Very early in the tournament, I'm dealt A5h in the BB. I limp with 4 other players. Flop comes K 5 5. I bet 1/2 pot, and a guy to my left calls, while the other two players fold. Turn brings the case 5. I again bet ~1/2 the pot. Insta-call. River is a blank...

How much do you bet in this situation?

I made a pot-sized bet, and the guy acts kinda frustrated - like he knows we're gonna chop but he calls anyway...I immediately regretted the bet. I'm guessing he probably calls an all-in, assuming we'll chop. Again, it's early in the tournament, and he and I both have 10k chips.

Think I got the most value out of this hand?
